The Jakarta provincial government has targeted to convert 50 percent of the fleet of the bus rapid transit system TransJakarta to function as electric-powered vehicles by 2025.

"The shift will be made step-by-step to transition half of the TransJakarta (vehicles) to function as electric buses, and the entire process will be completed by 2025," Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan remarked at the first day of the Jakarta E-Mobility Event that is part of the U20 Indonesia framework here on Tuesday.

According to Baswedan, the TransJakarta electric bus is a pilot project in the efforts to minimize carbon emissions produced by motor vehicles. The main target is to make Jakarta free from emission-generating vehicles by 2050, he stated.

"The nearest target is Jakarta that can reduce carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2030," he affirmed.

Baswedan is optimistic that the 2050 target can be achieved as currently, Jakarta has reduced carbon emissions by 26 percent.

In addition, the central government has targeted Indonesia to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto also noted that the way to achieve the target is by optimally utilizing green technology.

The minister explained that green technology produced goods that are environment-friendly and can certainly support the goal of reducing carbon emissions.

On Friday, September 10, 2021, TransJakarta had launched its first electric bus to serve commuters along the Blok M-Jakarta City Hall route.

Former President Director of PT TransJakarta Sardjono Jhony noted that the company had cooperated with automotive manufacturer PT Higer Maju Indonesia to conduct the operational trial of the electric bus.

After the trial, Jhony expects the TransJakarta system to operate five thousand electric buses by 2025.

Meanwhile, regarding the event that Baswedan was addressing, U20 is part of the Indonesian G20 Presidency 2022 group meetings.

According to the official website, U20 or Urban20 is organized under the Sherpa Track and discusses problems or challenges arising in cities that mainly focus on tackling the global climate crisis and striving for sustainable development.
