Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita underscored the importance of digital transformation in the industrial sector to expedite economic recovery.

Minister Kartasasmita said the G20 Forum was established in response to the global economic crisis during the 1997-1998 period that drove governments to find common solutions to free the world from the protracted crisis and create strong and sustainable economic growth.

"Unlike earlier world crises, this time we recognize a term called digital connectivity, which then accelerates digitization in various economic activities," the minister remarked at the G20 Trade, Investment, and Industry Ministerial Meeting (TIIMM) in Bali, Thursday, as quoted from a written statement here on Friday.

The minister noted that when the world is hit by a multidimensional crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social restrictions had resulted in a decline in the demand for goods and services, disrupted global supply chains, and resulted in an overall recession.

Kartasasmita stated that the characteristics of contactless digitization are now becoming more relevant, especially during a pandemic. He noted that the characteristics brought by the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era allowed the industrial sector to continue operating remotely even during lockdown.

"This makes digitally advanced industries to be better able to deal with the impact of the pandemic and adjust to the new normal," the minister remarked.

Moreover, he highlighted that one of the priority issues during Indonesia's G20 presidency is "Sustainable and Inclusive Industrialization Via Industry 4.0" that shows the role of Industry 4.0 in encouraging digital transformation and the implementation of green industries to achieve inclusive and sustainable industrialization.

With these challenges, more strategic policies are deemed necessary to reconstruct production capacity that can adapt to these structural changes, including ensuring the creation of a conducive policy environment for the manufacturing industry, including through the support of open and unimpeded trade and investment policies.

"Hence, we can confidently face unexpected events in the future, and of course, without forgetting those, who are most vulnerable to the impact of the crisis, and ensure that no country is left behind," the minister stated.

Minister Kartasasmita also called for solidarity that is the key to opening the possibilities of a better and fairer future in accordance with the spirit of the G20 collaboration to "Recover Together, Recover Stronger."

"Hence, everyone has the opportunity to come together and share their views through not only discussing issues related to trade and investment but also discussing industrial issues together," the minister stated.
