Deputy for Gender Equality at the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Lenny N. Rosalin stated that G20 Empower encourages the acceleration of creating a safe work environment for women.

"The discussion at this meeting must find practical and implementable solutions on how to build work situations and conditions that support women. This is important, so that this issue can be included in the G20 Summit outcome document, can be adopted by all participating countries, and most importantly, can be applied in companies and industries," Rosalin noted through the G20 Side Event press release here on Wednesday.

Creating a safe work environment is deemed essential, considering that violence occurs massively in the workplace during the pandemic, both among women, who work offline and online.

Many cases of violence against women in the work environment are committed by their superiors and co-workers, Rosalin pointed out.

She cited global data showing that cases of violence had increased by 31 million in the first six months of the COVID-19 pandemic and were increasing to 15 million cases every three months thereon.

Manpower Minister Ida Fauziyah remarked that the G20 side event offers the right momentum to discuss, share, and offer inputs in the efforts to create a safe and better work environment for women, especially amid the pandemic and digital disruption that place women at a higher risk of lower wage from work in the informal sector, with non-standard tasks, that are unsafe and risky.

To this end, the Indonesian government continues to encourage the G20 to boost equality and empowerment of women in the world through various progressive interventions to reduce inequal women's participation at work.

"Indonesia believes that promoting gender equality will encourage inclusive and sustainable economic growth, especially for economic development of the G20," she remarked.
